It was, says Bert Felton, worth every penny, every discomfort, every apprehension. “I’m in the rigging of the Endeavour in that southwest wind Thursday afternoon, and we’re entering the Southport harbor,” he remembered Monday — “It was an experience I’ll never forget.” Boarding in Charleston the previous Monday, Felton was among three dozen sailors — professional and paying passenger — who sailed the replica 18th century bark into the Atlantic deep, drew near to Myrtle Beach and fired cannon salutes at the Grand Strand, and%ood out to sea again. Then on Wednesday night watch it was Felton who Sighted and reported the four flashes of the Oak Island lighthouse, just where it was supposed to be. Entering the river he was so engaged aloft, gathering in the sails, that he couldn’t even say when the pilot boat came to take the pilot ashore. “When you’re up there everything is in front of you,” he laughed. “A bear could climb up behind you and you wouldn’t notice.” He’s planning his next trip already. Felton said the ship’s complement included about 14 professional crew members and some 22 “voyage crew” — all of whom were required to sail the ship properly. Though equipped with diesel auxiliary engines the ship depends otherwise on strong hands for the business of getting about ~ as Felton and 20 others found out Thursday when the anchor line fouled and the anchor had to be lifted with the anchor capstan, and it took all of them to do it. Felton’s fellow “voyage crewmen” came from far afield, including two New Yorkers who found they could obtain passage easily from Charleston now but that getting a berth as the ship sails into the populous and sail-conscious Northeast will become increasingly dif ficult. ‘ . A volunteer crewman for the Elizabeth II, though he has yet to sail on her, Felton says that the experience not only was a personal sat isfaction but a great benefit for his duties on the staff at Brunswick Town. “The work was very hard, but it was the real McCoy,” he said. ‘Thousands of visitors at Brunswick Town will be the beneficiaries of that, as I explain about the docks and ships who came into Brunswick Town.” Hundreds of visitors at Brunswick Town can benefit Monday beginning at 1:30 p.m. as the site readies itself for the departure passage of Endeavour. : Sailing from Wilmington at 2 p.m. she will be greeted by the red British ensign typical of the real Endeavour's time (and service under British flag). “And we’ll have a salute from the swivel gun from Manteo — the gun off of the Elizabeth II," Felton said. Almost certainly the ship will return the honors. Hold your ears, but let your imagination soar. Felton captured this brief moment in the Charleston-Southport pas sage when a crew member fulfilled everyone’s notion of what a sea cruise should be like. Recent refurbishing of the facade of St. Philip’s Episcopal Church led us to review our older photos of the church, and we ran across this shot of a major renovation in 1962 when the steeple was reworked on the ground and lifted again into place.
